Should We Be Worried About Rising Jet Fuel Prices?
If you’ve been scrolling through the news lately, you’ve probably seen some slightly scary headlines about the rising cost of jet fuel. Between global tensions and supply chain hiccups, it feels like there’s always something trying to mess with our holiday plans!
I have been asked a lot what it means and if people need to worry about their holidays, so, before we start panic-cancelling things and unpacking suitcases, I want to break down what is actually happening and if you need to worry.
Why is the price going up?
It mostly comes down to what's happening in the Middle East. Since that’s where a huge chunk of the world’s oil comes from, any conflict there makes prices jump. There have also been some issues with shipping routes (like the Strait of Hormuz), which just makes it harder and more expensive to move fuel around.
Does this mean my flight will be cancelled?
The short answer: Don't panic. Most flights are running exactly as planned.
However, you might see some changes, which are basically strategic. For example, some airlines are cutting back on quiet, domestic routes that aren't making much money. If your flight is not full and therefore not making the airline money, this is what may be cancelled. If you are travelling to a typically touristy destination, or a well travelled route, you likely do not need to worry.
You might also hear about new contingency plans that allow airlines to combine flights or tweak schedules a few weeks in advance. The goal of these plans is actually to prevent last-minute chaos at the airport. It’s much better to know two weeks early that your 2PM flight is now at 4PM than to find out while you're standing at the gate!
Should I book now or wait?
If you’re eyeing up a trip but haven’t pulled the trigger yet, booking sooner is probably smarter.
Airlines have enough fuel for now, but as their costs go up, they’ll eventually pass that on to us through higher ticket prices. If you book today, your price is locked in. (Note: If you’ve already booked a flight, the airline cannot come back and ask for more money!)
3 Quick Tips for Peace of Mind:
Book with a travel agent: If something does change, it’s much easier to deal with a travel agent than trying to go to the airline directly or trying to go through a third-party booking site.
Go for the morning flight: Usually, if there’s a knock-on effect from delays or fuel issues, the earlier flights are the most reliable.
Check your contact info: Make sure the airline has your correct email and phone number so you get any alerts instantly.
Is the situation perfect? No. Is your summer holiday ruined? Highly unlikely! Keep an eye on your inbox, but ultimately, chances are your flights will be fine ☀️
